First, public responsiveness provides an important motivation for politicians to represent public preferences: a monitoring public. Note that whether the sign of the coefficient for public preferences in the policy representation analyses should be positive, the sign of the coefficient for policy in the public responsiveness analyses can be either negative, if a negative feedback prevails, or positive, if a positive feedback prevails (for a full discussion on feedback, see Soroka and Wlezien 2010, pp. 29–30). The first and longest part will address whether income has a positive effect on policy responsiveness, starting with some descriptive information. The second part will discuss the mechanisms of political participation, descriptive representation and interest-group lobbying, in turn.
Political representation is the activity of making citizens "present" in public policy making processes when political actors act in the best interest of citizens. This definition of political representation is consistent with a wide variety of views on what representing implies and what the duties of representatives are.
People tend to be more favorable when a decision is made by a group of people that resemble the population and that are experts, and when that decision is in line with their preferences.
