A structure model of Hsp21, obtained by homology modeling, single-particle electron microscopy, and lysine-specific chemical crosslinking, shows that the Hsp21 subunits are arranged in two hexameric discs, rotated by 25 degree in relation to each other. HSP21 chaperones core subunits of photosystem II 1107. parameter Fv/Fm was measured in order to test the harm-ful effects of GUN5 disruption on the maximal quantum yield of PSII. In agreement with its heat-sensitive pheno-types, the Fv/Fm value of the gun5 mutant was progres- HSP21 and pTAC5 formed a complex that was associated mainly with the PEP complex. HSP21 and pTAC5 were associated with the PEP complex not only during transcription initiation, but also during elongation and termination. Our results suggest that HSP21 and pTAC5 are required for chloroplast development under heat stress by maintaining PEP function. Furthermore, the gun5 HSP21‐overexpression line maintained relatively higher Fv/Fm values that were slightly lower than that of wild‐type plants during heat treatment, but substantial decreases in Fv/Fm values were detected in the gun5 mutant, reflecting a significant improvement in thylakoid stability in the overexpression line (Figure 3c).
