Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn graced the cover of Time Magazine in 1974; that same year he would go on to accept the Nobel Prize for Literature that he was awarded in 1970 while in exile. Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (11 December 1918 – 3 August 2008) was a Russian novelist, philosopher, historian, short story writer and political prisoner.

His death caused a considerable mourning in Russia, especially among the Russian conservatives and Orthodox Christians. Solzhenitsyn received a state funeral and was laid to rest in Donskoy Convent cemetery in Moscow, Russia.
